| The Swedish Ship Officers' Association, SSOA, was founded in 1907. It
was masters and chief officers who started the association, but in the forties
the radio officers joined the association and in the end of the sixties
the catering officers. |
| Today SSOA represents 2 700 members in the swedish merchant fleet, the
swedish-owned foreign flag ships and other foreign ships. Plus 1 600 passive
members; retired and others. The members are divided into four sections;
international, inland, catering officers and the section
for navigators employed by state-owned companies. |
| The Swedish Ship Officers' Association is not only a trade union, it
is also a branch organization that takes care of the interests of the members,
for example in questions of training and education, management, maritime
safety and environmental protection, and has a direct influence on legislation
and politics concerning shipping. |
| The Swedish Ship Officers' Association participates internationally in
the Swedish delegation at the IMO, International Maritime Organization,
and ILO, International Labour Organization. |
| SSOA is affiliated member of IFSMA, International Federation of Shipmasters'
Associations, and ITF, International Transport Workers' Federation. |
| Within Scandinavia The Swedish Ship Officers' Association is represented
in Nordic Transport Workers' Federation (NTF), Nordic Ship Officers' Congress
(NFBK). |
| The Swedish Ship Officers' Association has a main office
in Stockholm with a total number of seven
employees. |
| SSOA edits a periodical "Nautisk Tidskrift" with 8 editions
a year.
